its been a year or two since we featured a 12- single release from a new project. so hear at bearfunk we are really pleased to be releasing a cracker of a track. -gong bong-. it is from the caribbean house who are a new(ish) italian collective based around the core members of billy bogus & ferderico bologna. the original is one part slo-mo disco, one part psychedelic moondance and one part sci-fi horror movie. the track begins with swirling bass guitar and grinding synth before layering on a waft of sound effects and spooky keys. if the first two thirds of the track is a caterpillar then the last third is a butterfly as uplifting riffs and swirls of layered keys bring things to a crescendo. fellow italians the mushrooms project are up on remix duty first of all. they strip back the layers and concentrate on the growling bass and locked on pulsating synth. its back to the uk for the second remix where label honcho stevie kotey gets his percussion out for a drum, timpani and swing remix. stay tuned for more from the collective on bearfunk shortly.

the golden ravedays is an epic album of 24 tracks that was released in january 2017 and is stretching over 12 respective chapter albums during a one-year period. the sixth piece of the golden ravedays puzzle will be released on hippie dance in june 2017.

number 6 of the series introduces two further tracks of the sound adventure that superpitcher is taking us on this year. side a features protest song. if music is a way of transporting us to other places, protest song takes us to a desolate, scary and loveless environment, a burnt-down, burnt-out place where the flesh of its former inhabitants is smouldering, void of goodwill and kindness in a cloud of toxic and greedy smoke. it’s all kafka and orwell and suffering - the most twisted and eerie track so far in the golden ravedays saga. what is undeniably clear is an acute sense of regret and loss - a warning that it could have been avoided, had we only listened to our hearts and protested. in the same vein on side b we hear powerful resistance. produced after the paris attacks of 2015 superpitcher outdid himself with this strong message of resistance. where protest song paints a picture of under-worldly doom, resistance’s techno beat and insistent refrain sweeps us to the surface of the muck of hatred and intolerance we’ve politically been dumped in. a voice that seems like a trapped animal is calling out to us. what is it trying to say? is it crying out for help? is that animal all of us? resistance represents hope and encouragement and could be the perfect marching track to any demonstration against negative forces. much needed in this age of bigotry where it seems like time has leaped backwards to a darker side of history. as for the dancefloor – resistance is irresistible!

jah wobble s biography is a long and winding one, and he s achieved a lot both in collaboration with others and of his own accord. emotional rescue know a talented auteur when they hear one, and in the case of wobble they ve chosen to shed light on one of his less well documented phases, when he started his own label called lago. drawing on recordings made between 1981 and 1985, the lago years is a captivating listen that touches on post punk and no wave all the way through to dreamy psychedelia and the kind of world music wobble would become so well known for later on in his career. an essential collection for any lovers of leftfield music and mysticism.

the secret initiative has been cloaked in secrecy since it’s inception in 2009.
over the past 8 years there has been a lot of speculation on who the artist(s) is/are behind this project. is it a collective of artists or a solo artist still remains to be answered. the secret initiative is a multi styled project ranging across the spectrum of acid techno, dub techno, hard techno & ebm mostly done in a 1990’s flavor but with a modern day punchy production sound. here on the latest release we have two peak time dance floor killers. “synesthete” a dark track-y techno climax-er with a whisper vocal sample repeating “i see the music, i hear the light” which builds into a monster of a track. on the flip side is the hard but hypnotic “return to mcmxc” which pays hommage to the 1990 frankfurt technoclub/dorian gray ebm techno sound.

madcap and jaybee team up to create the musical masterpiece called “settle down”. the song starts out rather jazzy, with it’s smooth rhodes keys and heavy cymbal riding drum lines. when the song hits the breakdown, the whole tone of the tune changes. the punchy sub bassline is unleashed and becomes one of the driving forces of the track. echoing reggae style vocals are beautifully weaved into the background of the track, transforming the vibe into a reggae/dub style d&b classic. the amen drums also help to create an intoxicating energy that make this one a sure thing for dance floor mayhem. instant classic!
“hear comes” takes over where “settle down” left off. the song begins with big amen drums, backed with a reggae style skanking guitar chop. during the breakdown, a thoughtful roots reggae vocal sample is introduced that helps lift the track into a true dubwise gem. when the drop hits, the baseline kicks in and begins to wobble and throb behind all the deep atmospherics. the track has a beautiful breakdown, which takes the listener to a more melodic place. after a moment of serenity, the song breaks back into the chaotic old school flavor, which madcap does so well. this one’s a beauty!!

charlie watts meets the danish radio big band is the kind of album that many jazz fans had probably given up hope of hearing. in the glory days of big band jazz and arrangers like oliver nelson coming up with brilliant music, albums like this were, if not commonplace, at least more readily available. the truth is there is nothing commonplace about this album, it is a sheer delight.
anyone who knows charlie, knows how much he loves jazz. a few years ago when he and i were looking at a photo of the stones playing in the 1960s he pointed at a particular cymbal and said, “i’ve still got that cymbal, but i don’t use it on stones’ gigs, it’s too good for them. i just use it on my jazz gigs.” there’s no doubt, that’s the cymbal you hear on the first part of the ‘elvin suite’.
charlie watts is one of the great ambassadors for jazz and every jazz lover will relish this record, and the fact that charlie is involved may bring jazz to the attention of some that are not sure if they like jazz. listen to this and you know you do.

mjm would like to present locations: usa, the vinyl and cassette edition as we continue to explore the sounds, influences and styles of jazz music in different regions of the world.
in this session we hear the result of each jouster as they each chose one or more jazz musicians from the united states and began to work with that sound and come up with an instrumental in their own style, just like in season four. however there was a twist, this time they were challenged to focus on jazz between the years of 1960 to 1969. see what you think of the outcome...

two deep and driving house tunes by baaz! since the release of his last sol 12inch „swimmer“ (sol5) quite a bit has happened: baaz founded his own successful label office recordings, he has also created a new moniker for his dub techno productions as -eric miller-. his love of dubby sounds and echo chambers can be experienced in „the reason“ and „ancestor s fun“, although it s obvious that baaz also stays true to his deep house roots. he skillfully combines spacial structures with his characteristic driving beats and organic sounds. -the reason- is a grooving light footed tune with a jumping bassline and develops, step by step, this driving energy, that will not let you go. -ancestor s fun- brings up the energy level with stronger beats and open high hats, but the playful warm sounds and drifting strings keeps the wonderful flow that we love to hear from baaz s productions

five years deep into the game, all nine lives fully intact: utrechtian feral feline larry de kat prowls his way onto pets. and we really dont need to tell you how purrrrfectly apt this debut union is. fresh from launching his own katnip imprint (and putting the final touches on a hush-hush disco edit series), pets have managed to prise four of his finest, broadest creations from his creative claws. each one floorbound, each one backing up the hype hes enjoyed from the likes of axel boman, mark e and laurent garnier, each one making us feel like cats who got the creamiest of creams. i know you can hear me’ takes the lead on a more direct tip that you might expect from de kat. big pumps wrapped in a fine vibe balance of detroit and parisian house textures, but done with larrys signature dubby, jacking style, its the perfect paws-sitive statement of intent. slinking deeper into the ep, naakte groove lives up to its nude name with a lean-but-warm bass riff that purrs with finesse around a straight-up strutting drum arrangement. so much fun in such a tight, detailed groove, youll want this on loop forever.amlou stalks up behind with dusty, thumping charm. rolling and scratching like it was 20 years younger, theres an innate physicality in the drums that snaps you out when the big disco hook rides in from nowhere. finally we hit she doesnt. the dubbiest groove of the set, all eyes are on that bulbous sub, rippling synths and precision tuned snare shot. hypnotic, heavy, unhurried and heads down. these sounds are fur real. like all the best stray cats, expect larry to return to pets as and when he pleases.

ricky l and marcoradi have been friends for as long as they can remember. they first met on the dancefloor of one of italy’s most iconic clubs, red zone in perugia, where ricky has been a resident dj for the best part of 25 years. now, they’ve joined forces in the studio for the first time, uniting under the hear & now alias for claremont 56. those with a keen knowledge of italian dance music will know their impressive track records. both have a history of producing fine deep house records and remixes for the likes of ibadan, uomo, reincarnation, top tracks, restricted tracks and vega records. with hear & now, they’ve decided to step back from the dancefloor, instead producing hazy, emotion-rich music for after-hours listening, and mornings spent blinking into the sunshine.

shadow child returns with his connected collaborations album. album sampler 2 of 2 features his official rework of the future sound of london’s seminal ‘papua new guinea’, ‘err’ offering it s bouncing bassline and skippy 909 hats with huxley and finally ‘gacid’, which is possibly the friendliest acid tune you’ll hear with the elusive supertanker.

san fran-based artist, tape_hiss releases his second ep on love notes and you can clearly hear both his sound and the label s maturing in tandem. moving on from the depth of his first record, love is a dog from hell, tape_hiss takes things into headier waters, going heavy on the acid and the rugged basslines on this 4 track ep. angelian war storm begins in exactly that fashion, with 303s squelching and bassbins rattling. this continues through the clear standout trackout, the vivian girls. the gears shift a bit on the b1 where sistrum boss, patrice scott is allowed to rework the vivian girls and does so in a warbly, dirty jazz fashion. tape_hiss then closes things out with the title track, realms of the unreal, which uses an appropriate sample annoucing, “this is me, yo. right here”, and it does very much sound to us like this budding artist is annoucing himself to the world in a most proper fashion. we can’t wait to hear what comes next from both artist and label.

betty harris’ the lost queen of new orleans soul features all of her classic deep soul, sister funk and northern soul songs recorded in new orleans in the 1960s - all written, produced and arranged by the legendary allen toussaint, and featuring the cream of new orleans musicians and the incredible meters. the heavyweight 180 gram double vinyl lp comes in a gatefold sleeve with.

the second ep, 1987s greenfingers, was their final recorded work and, according to hayward, its possible to hear the group atomising and preparing to go its separate ways within its grooves. the only this heat or camberwell now recording not to have been produced at brixtons cold storage studios, it was recorded as a diy exercise and – unusually for either of the groups – was not pored over laboriously for a great deal of time. the ep also saw the addition of a new member, maria lamburn, primarily on sax, whose element unknown was inspired by her experiences in the nuclear protest camp at greenham common. camberwell, in south london, pops up infrequently in pop culture. perhaps you know it from the camberwell carrot, the heroically sized joint smoked in cult movie withnail & i, or perhaps – if youre attuned to experimental music – you know of camberwell now. the group formed from the ashes of this heat, the art-noise group whose catalog was reissued on modern classics recordings in early 2016.

black crow is the third single to be taken from the album ‘the soft bounce’. part american gothic, part future movie soundtrack, it’s a song of haunting beauty. holly miranda s vocal glides across reflective strings and delicate crystalline snippets of sound, resulting in an epic torch song lament. it’s backed with white crow, erol alkan s mighty extended reworking of the song, placing it in spacious widescreen, where you can hear for miles.

hey everyone, dont be alarmed as we understand that you just heard of us a few weeks back. here we are again with another doobified doozie of a 12inch. from the furthest reaches of the canadian west coast comes a concoction by three well known faces that have a long history of working together, they prefer to remain anonymous for this 12inch for reasons beyond us. were not that good at keeping secrets and have a suspicion that you hear the rambling house that is emitted from this trio brings to your ears will recall something very familiar. johnny lumière and the triads, originally conceived as side characters of the adventures of t-bar and salary man cartoon (never published). the music was recorded during break intervals in the cartoon writing sessions (still seeking illustrator). file this under mystified house with a splash of sunshine. ps:weve been doing our own printed sleeves for the last few records from a really cool print house here in berlin. we think they look unique as they are a print/ fold out designed by our friend dave girard. people seem to be into them and figured we should say that as we are only doing limited runs of them.

nice price deal !!! afrikanz on marz come correct with their second release for out hear audio. this follows on from their acclaimed first single the road we travel. ashley beedle and darren morris have joined forces with uk rap artist skilf to concoct a psychedelic drum led monster with shades of early warp bleepness, bass funk and headhunter era herbie hancock to come up with something unique and thought provoking. skilf lets loose with gritty lyrics and completes a strong combination. skilf is a brighton based rap/dance artist with a unique and distinctive sound. unfazed by the restrictions of >genre< over the years he has worked with a range of producers. artists from bob dylan, to wu tang clan to the streets have had a big impact on skilfs approach to writing and rapping.

(if any)think croydon and a few things come to mind, kate moss, punk band the damned, crystal palace football club, peep show and of course dubstep, the now world conquering music genre that will forever be linked to the south london suburb. what you never hear though, is any mention of tech house, another world conquering music genre. and to be honest we’re a little bit peeved about that. because if tech house has a spiritual home it’s croydon, and that is due mainly to swag records and the people that gravitated towards the humble west croydon record shop and studio.

trolldans once again opens its musical tome of fairy tales, this time featuring the gif-ted sound sculptor edanticonf. in his chapter of the trolldans volume, edanticonf presents us with the three crying fairies. it is a tale in four parts of desire and tears - as every good story should be. the first fairy tells us about a lake in the deep woods where a young princess called tuvstarr once lost her gold heart. no creature of the forest could convince the princess to let it go, and so she stayed there by the black lake until she turned into a beautiful flower. the second fairy tells us how the princess, before she lost her precious necklace, would ride like the wind through the forest on the back a grand elk. the princess loved the thrill and the elk loved the princess. vril steps in and actually lets us hear the noble elks heart racing from both the pace and his devotion to tuvstarr. the third fairy ends endanticonfs beautiful but melancholy tale with a glimmer of hope: by the darkest of lakes, the loveliest flo-wers grow. the end.

*michael ferragosto is back on italy s own dog in the night label with four new twisted psychedelic house cuts. as usual we hear the artist taking the traditional blueprints of chicago house and putting his own signature chops to it resulting in a bizzare mix up of jacking madness that will get the floor going wild. amazing stuff that is not to be missed

benales opens the e.p. with radiate, a track where you can clearly hear his influences of the american school of 90s minimal techno. long time dj but new on the production side, this is benales first effort on vinyl. after his initial masterpiece on knotweed records (kw006) and a handful of releases on demented (hiss 1992) and krill, opuswerk is back on knotweed with displacement, a trippy, hard hitting, analogic techno attack: no concession on this one! gonzalo md has already delivered the goods on both knotweed (kw004 and kw011) and decision making theory (dmt 006), as well as a fantastic ep recently on extrasolar. here, with sharp oscillation, he keeps developing his unique style, producing a highly percussive, almost samba-like, piece of techno. label owner philippe petit closes the e.p. with indian summer, a track moving along a warm bassline, bearing some recognisable krautrock influences.

jun kamoda is a producer, dj and mc from tokyo. new to the label but a friend of the party, jun came to mister sunday in nyc last year and ended up hanging around for a few days afterward, digging for records and sharing bowls of spaghetti with the boys. when he returned to japan, he got to working on the music we now present to you on the clay ep. this is jun blending loopy, psychedelic disco stylings with chugging drum work for three party-ready cuts. they’ve been chopping up our dance floors months, we’re excited to hear them do the same to yours.

“champion music for the heartbroken.” that’s how bryndon cook, who records as starchild, describes crucial, his first ep for ghostly. it’s easy to hear what he means: over the course of the record’s 30 minutes, starchild creates songs that draw equally on electro and r&b, with silky sheets of synth cascading over rubbery bass lines. and at the center of every one of them is an undeniable twinge of sadness.
